I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review from Get Underlined before the June protest events. The topics covered in this novel are always relevant, but the release of this work is extremely timely. If you’re interested in the effects of the justice system in marginalized communities, this YA book is perfect for your #TBR. Riveting from the very beginning, the author crafts a thrilling opening that immediately draws the reader in as we meet a young girl trying to get her father off of death row with only months left to live. Ms. Johnson illustrates the ongoing battles of raising a family with an incarcerated parent and the impact on the family once that parent is released. This book is not for the faint of heart. The book takes on twists and turns in the journey to protect her brother from having the same fate as their father. The protagonist is ambitious and laser focused – perhaps, too much so, but the teenage passion present in her character drives the novel to an exciting finish. I rate this novel a solid 5 stars!
